1. Planning Your Move Online: Strategy

Avoid investing in a website that doesn't hit it's target. Before you build, think about: Who are your clients? What do they want? How much time do they have?

We've seen it too many times; businesses go to a website designer, hand them a logo and a brochure and ask them to build a website!  While this can often lead to an aesthetically pleasing site, it usually isn't quite right.  There has been no consideration of the target audience, the goals of the website, the functionality required on each page of the site, and especially how the success of the website is measured.

Who is the target market? Within the target market define each segment which the client offering & website (or its sub-components) will be targeted at?



What is the overarching objective of the site? What are the goals of the site? What does success look like in a) 1 year b) 3 years?



What is the objective of the site for each of the segments identified? What are the goals for each objective and what are the criteria to be used to measure each?

What are the customer needs for each segment? How does this translate into objectives for each page? What are the content and tools are required to meet the customer's needs? What are the outcomes that are sought for each page (eg. click forward, download a whitepaper, register interest, make an enquiry, transact)

How do the pages relate to each other? define the linkages and flows between pages, site wide navigation and page specific navigation. Define page policies (content review and content addition). Select tools to manage the site based on content requirements. Define back end system integration requirements.

Implementation team and project management. Select resources for ongoing management to maintain momentum and provide ongoing measurement and reporting on outcomes to site and segment objectives.
