SEO Explained - Page 14
Techniques for Link Building

How to build links?

There are a lot of different ways to build links to your website from other websites.   Here’s just a few:

Fishing with LinkBait:

This is a colloquial term for trying to attract links to your site.   It is simply the process of creating free, useful content on your site which creates its own incentive for people to link to your website.  This SEO eBook is a form of linkbait.   It doesn’t have to be lengthy or complex – any valuable content is good link bait.  If you like this eBook – link to it!  ;-)

A fundamental truth of SEO success is that fresh, useful content, posted on a regular basis to your website – will ensure that you attract inbound links, and website visitors.  If you can find ways to keep your site full of fresh, useful content, many of the other issues involved in SEO end up taking care of themselves.   Alas, this is hard to achieve for most of us – and so the other aspects of SEO become very important.

Directory Placement:

There are a range of websites around, which exist simply as directories with categories of links pointing to other websites.    This is a good way to build some fast, relevant links.

Many directories such as dmoz.org, dir.yahoo.com, and other specialist industry directories will allow you to create a link to your website from theirs.   Do a search on:

<your industry> directory

...on Google in order to find any specialist  or industry specific directories, so in our example – you would search for Footwear Directory, Athletics Directory etc and try to arrange links to your site on these directories.  A link to your site from another website in your industry is more valuable than a link from a site in an unrelated industry – so focusing on directories, or websites in your industry subject area, or related subjects is where you should focus most of your energies.

Reciprocal Link Exchange:

This is a process where someone will link to your site, if you, in exchange, will agree to link to theirs.   There is much debate in the SEO community about the value of reciprocal links.   Google and others have recognised this as an artificial SEO practice, and this is definitely not as valuable as it used to be.   Here at Salsa, we will still exchange links if the site in question has a high enough PageRank™ (>=5) or if they are relevant enough to our website audience.

To know whether it’s worth linking, reflect on your audience and how useful or relevant they would find the site with which you are thinking of exchanging links.   If this site would be highly useful or relevant to your website vistitors, then chances are that it’s worth exchanging links.

News Article Submission

There are many sites around the web which accept news articles, or which are directories showcasing new articles.   If you place a well written article on these directories or article submission sites, then chances are – if the article is relevant and interesting, then others will pickup your article and list it on their website.

When writing your article, it’s worth including links to your website within the content of the article itself (as long as this is relevant to the article content).   This will ensure that as others pickup this article and list it on their website – that links to your site will be included.   Article submission can be a great way to get a large number of inbound links to your site.    If you’re not much of an author yourself, there are plenty of copywriters or journalists around who will write on your behalf (for a fee of course) in order to help you link building programme in that way.

Forum Posting

If you’ve spent much time online, then chances are you’ve either read or contributed to a newsgroup or forum where people interested in this subject congregate to discuss issues online.   Many forums, particularly smaller forums will allow you to create a “signature” which is automatically placed at the bottom of any posts that you make to that forum.

By including your website address in your signature i.e.

“Cheers
Phil B
http://www.salsainternet.com.au”

….this will ensure that each post that you make to that forum becomes another link to your website.  By posting to forums which are related to your industry or subject are, you can gain links to your site from a page which is also related to your industry.   This increases the value of this inbound link.   Forum posting can be a fast way to easily build up links to your website.
